Brazilian oil giant Petrobras, in collaboration with Colombian counterpart Ecopetrol, has begun drilling the Uchuva-2 appraisal well in the Tayrona block, located offshore Colombia. This operation aims to determine the full potential of the natural gas discovery made at the Uchuva-1 exploration well in July 2022.
Uchuva-1, situated in deep waters (837 meters), is roughly 32 kilometers from the Colombian coastline and 76 kilometers from the city of Santa Marta. The Tayrona block is operated by Petrobras with a 44.4% stake, with Ecopetrol holding the majority share (55.6%).
Ecopetrol anticipates initial gas production from the Tayrona block by 2026. "The Uchuva-1 discovery is a major win for Ecopetrol and Colombia," said Elsa Jeanneth Jaimes, Ecopetrol's vice-president for offshore operations. "It reinforces the Caribbean's significance as a key gas source for our nation."
The Uchuva-2 well will provide crucial data for planning and connecting the gas field to consumption centers, further bolstering Colombia's energy security. This news follows Petrobras' decision in May 2023 to retain its stake in the Tayrona block, reported by Reuters.
Colombia is actively pursuing offshore gas exploration and development to lessen import reliance and support various industries, including petrochemicals and power generation. Estimates by Petrobras executives suggest the Tayrona block holds significant reserves, potentially reaching four trillion cubic feet of natural gas.
