Argentinian Chapter

The Argentina chapter of the Energy Circle will act as a premier networking hub for the oil and gas industries. With Argentina emerging as a critical player in both conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon markets, this chapter will focus on unlocking synergies between exploration, production, and sustainable practices, while addressing the challenges of energy.

Main projects

Vaca Muerta Shale Formation

Location: Neuquén Basin, Argentina - Status: Operational, ongoing development - Owner: YPF, Shell, ExxonMobil, Vista Oil & Gas, and others - Installed Capacity: Over 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d) with future expansions planned

Vaca Muerta is one of the world’s largest shale oil and gas formations, comparable to the Permian Basin in the United States. It has been a key driver of Argentina’s hydrocarbons resurgence. With continued investments, Vaca Muerta is set to play a crucial role in both domestic supply and exports, especially LNG in the coming years.

Tango FLNG

Location: Bahía Blanca, Buenos Aires Province - Status: Operational (since 2019) - Owner: YPF and Exmar
Installed Capacity: Capable of producing up to 500,000 tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) per year

Tango FLNG is a vital project for Argentina's LNG export strategy, allowing the country to monetize its surplus natural gas from Vaca Muerta. As the only operational LNG export facility in Argentina, it enables the country to enter global LNG markets, with potential plans to increase capacity and expand export capabilities.

Offshore Exploration

Location: Tierra del Fuego, Argentina (Offshore) - Status: Development, expected in 2025 - Owner: Total Energies, Wintershall Dea, Pan American Energy - Installed Capacity: Targeting around 10 million cubic meters of natural gas per day (mcm/d)

The Fénix Gas Project is a major offshore development aimed at expanding Argentina's natural gas production. With a significant investment, this project is expected to increase offshore output and help meet both domestic demand and potential LNG exports. It is part of Argentina's long-term strategy to become a regional energy leader.

Oldelval Pipeline Expansion

Location: Neuquén Basin to Bahía Blanca- Status: Under development, expansion to be completed by 2024 - Owner: Oldelval (owned by companies like YPF, Pampa Energía, and Shell) - Installed Capacity: Planned increase to 400,000 barrels per day (bpd)

A critical piece of infrastructure connecting the Neuquén Basin's oil production to Argentina's main export terminal in Bahía Blanca. This expansion project aims to alleviate bottlenecks in crude oil transportation and support the growth of Vaca Muerta by increasing export capacity, making Argentina a key supplier to global markets.
