Italy’s ENI and the UK’s BP have resumed their exploration activities in Libya after a hiatus in onshore drilling since 2014. Spain’s Repsol is also preparing to resume drilling operations in the Murzuq Basin, while Austria’s OMV is set to begin its activities in the Sirte Basin in the coming weeks.
ENI commenced its exploratory activities today, Saturday, October 26, in Area B (96/3) in the Ghadames Basin, starting with the drilling of the first exploratory well, A1–96/3 (Muamal Al-Hasheem).
The A1–96/3 well marks the first commitment well in Area B of the Ghadames Basin under the Fourth Contractual Agreement of 2007. ENI operates the area in partnership with BP and the Libyan Investment Authority.
Mellitah Oil & Gas, leveraging its extensive experience in the area following its operation and development of the Al-Wafa field, is overseeing the drilling and all activities related to the A1–96/3 well.
The A1–96/3 well is set to test several promising geological formations, expected to contain oil and gas, with a projected final depth of approximately 10,327 feet (3,147 meters). The well is located about 35 kilometers from the Al-Wafa field and approximately 650 kilometers from the capital, Tripoli.
