Greece-based METLEN and Shell Global LNG have signed a binding long-term agreement for the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG), marking a new step in their partnership and supporting Greece's efforts to diversify its energy sources.

Under the agreement, Shell will supply METLEN with six LNG cargoes annually, equivalent to approximately 0.6 billion cubic metres per year (bcm/year), over a five-year period starting in 2027. The deal builds on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the two companies in February 2026.

The agreement is expected to strengthen METLEN's gas supply portfolio and provide greater flexibility in meeting demand across Greece and other European markets.

Shell to Supply Six LNG Cargoes Annually

Under the terms of the agreement, Shell will deliver six LNG cargoes to METLEN each year, with total annual volumes reaching approximately 0.6 billion cubic metres.

The five-year supply period will begin in 2027, establishing a long-term supply arrangement between the two companies. The agreement follows the MoU signed in February 2026, which laid the groundwork for cooperation between METLEN and Shell in LNG supply.

For METLEN, securing long-term LNG volumes is part of its broader strategy to diversify energy sourcing and strengthen its position in the European energy market.

Partnership Strengthens METLEN's Position in European Energy Markets

Panayotis Kanellopoulos, Chief Executive Director of International Energy Supply & Trading at METLEN, said the agreement turns the companies' shared ambitions into a long-term supply partnership.

He highlighted the combination of Shell's global LNG capabilities and METLEN's established regional presence, noting that the partnership will strengthen the company's supply portfolio and provide greater flexibility in serving Greece and other European markets.

Kanellopoulos also described the agreement as another step in METLEN's strategy to diversify its energy sources and expand its role in Europe's changing energy landscape.

From Shell's side, Tom Summers, Executive Vice President for Shell LNG Marketing and Trading, highlighted the importance of LNG in providing flexible and reliable energy supplies to households and businesses across Greece and Europe. He added that Shell looks forward to exploring further opportunities to expand its cooperation with METLEN.

LNG Plays a Growing Role in Europe's Energy Supply

The agreement comes as European markets continue to focus on diversifying natural gas supplies and securing reliable sources of energy. LNG has become an important part of this strategy, allowing countries and energy companies to access gas from different international suppliers rather than relying on a limited number of pipeline routes.

For Greece, strengthening LNG supply partnerships supports its role in regional gas markets and provides additional flexibility in meeting domestic demand and serving neighbouring European markets.

Long-Term LNG Deals Strengthen Greece's Energy Position

The METLEN-Shell agreement highlights the growing importance of long-term LNG partnerships in Europe's energy strategy. Securing around 0.6 bcm of LNG annually for five years gives METLEN greater visibility over its gas supplies and strengthens its ability to serve customers in Greece and other European markets.

More broadly, the agreement reinforces Greece's position as an important entry point for LNG into Southeastern Europe. By working with major international suppliers such as Shell, regional energy companies can diversify their sourcing options and improve supply flexibility. The deal also reflects a wider shift in Europe's gas market: LNG is an increasingly important component of long-term energy security.

The key development to watch will be how METLEN uses these additional volumes across its energy portfolio and whether the partnership leads to further cooperation in LNG trading and regional supply.
