On 14 January 2025, history was made in the Neuquén Basin. Service companies Proshale and SLB, in collaboration with YPF, successfully completed the longest horizontal well in Vaca Muerta, reaching an impressive depth of 7,436 metres. This accomplishment not only sets a new technical benchmark for the region but also reinforces Argentina’s position as a global leader in the oil and gas industry.

A Technical Milestone

The operation, completed in 46 hours, was executed in a single run using 2 ⅜-inch Coiled Tubing, supported by an innovative suite of tools developed in Neuquén. Among the highlights was the deployment of a 3.13” OD Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA), featuring a TRX motor, a STEGO multi-cycle valve, and extended reach tools. These technologies played a pivotal role in reducing friction coefficients and minimising component fatigue, ensuring a faster and more efficient process. Additionally, flow rates of up to 5 BPM were handled, guaranteeing optimal wellbore cleanliness and laying the groundwork for future operations.

Proshale noted that this achievement demonstrates how meticulous planning and cutting-edge innovation can redefine industry boundaries:

"Collaboration and efficient coordination among all stakeholders ensured not only safety during execution but also optimised operational time in a challenging technical environment."

Impact on the Neuquén Basin and Beyond

This groundbreaking operation underscores the commitment of the companies involved to operational excellence and efficient solutions, essential drivers for the sustained growth of Vaca Muerta’s energy sector. The tools developed locally in Neuquén not only facilitated the operation but also highlighted the region’s technological capabilities to compete in an increasingly demanding global market.

Proshale emphasised that this record was achieved through team synergy, strategic planning, and the adoption of advanced technologies. This collaborative approach not only set a technical record but also established new standards for complex Oil & Gas operations.

Setting a Standard for Argentina’s Industry

The success of this operation in Vaca Muerta carries broader implications for Argentina’s energy sector. It demonstrates the country’s potential to lead innovation in the exploration and production of unconventional hydrocarbons. Furthermore, the reliance on locally developed technologies underscores Argentina’s ability to deliver competitive and sustainable solutions on the global stage.

The record-breaking achievement in Vaca Muerta represents more than just a technical milestone; it is a testament to the ingenuity, collaboration, and innovative capabilities of Argentina’s energy sector. With this success, Proshale and SLB have established a new benchmark, propelling the Neuquén Basin towards a promising future in the global oil and gas landscape.
