BP’s UCC project aims to develop the Ubadari gas field to supply feedstock for the existing Tangguh liquefaction facility while integrating carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology to enhance sustainability. Ubadari holds an estimated three trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves, with production slated to begin in 2028.
The Tangguh liquefaction facility, operational since 2009 and expanded in 2022 to include a third train, now boasts a total capacity of 11.4 million tons per annum. The Ubadari gas will be instrumental in meeting the growing energy demands across Asia, BP stated.
Pioneering CCUS in Indonesia
The project’s CCUS component marks a first for Indonesia, with plans to sequester approximately 15 million metric tons of CO2 during its initial phase. The technology will capture emissions from the gas project and re-inject CO2 into underground reservoirs via three injection wells, supported by an offshore injection platform and a CO2 pipeline.
“This initiative not only taps into a significant gas resource but also pioneers carbon capture technology in Indonesia, setting a benchmark for sustainable energy development in the region,” BP CEO Murray Auchincloss said.
Strategic Partnerships and Future Outlook
BP operates the Tangguh production sharing contract (PSC) with a 40.22% stake. Key partners include MI Berau B.V. (16.3%), CNOOC Muturi Ltd. (13.9%), and Nippon Oil Exploration (Berau) Ltd. (12.23%). Other stakeholders include KG Berau Petroleum Ltd., Indonesia Natural Gas Resources Muturi Inc., and KG Wiriagar Petroleum Ltd.
In 2022, Indonesia extended the Tangguh PSC by 20 years to 2055, reinforcing its commitment to long-term energy development.
