Strengthening Bilateral Energy Cooperation
Türkiye has embarked on a significant energy exploration mission in Somalia, marking a new chapter in the two nations’ collaborative efforts. The Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) and the Somali Petroleum Authority have signed an agreement granting TPAO exclusive rights to explore and produce hydrocarbons in three offshore blocks, each covering approximately 5,000 square kilometers.
Deployment of Oruc Reis for Seismic Surveys
The Oruc Reis, Türkiye’s advanced seismic research vessel, has arrived off the coast of Somalia after a 20-day voyage from Istanbul. The vessel is set to conduct three-dimensional seismic studies over a period of approximately seven months, gathering critical data to identify potential oil and natural gas drilling sites. This data will be analyzed in Ankara to determine viable extraction points.
Expansion into Onshore Exploration
In addition to offshore activities, TPAO and the Somali Petroleum Authority have signed an agreement for joint onshore hydrocarbon exploration in Somalia. This initiative aims to further enhance energy cooperation between the two countries and tap into Somalia’s onshore energy potential.
Historical Context and Future Prospects
This venture builds upon the strong bilateral relations established since Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to Somalia in 2011. Türkiye has since invested in various sectors within Somalia, including education, infrastructure, and health, alongside providing humanitarian aid. The current energy exploration efforts signify a deepening of this partnership, with the potential to contribute significantly to Somalia’s economic development and energy self-sufficiency.
